Using the power of the wind to create beautiful aeolian tones.

Howling Wire

A large scale Aeolian instrument. Howling Wire is one element of Audible Forces; an intricate landscape of musical installations powered by the wind. Intriguing kinetic, sonic creations that produce other-worldly sounds as nature’s unseen force breathes life into them. This captivating collection is inspired by sound artist Max Eastley’s explorations into Aeolian (wind driven) instruments, from their mythology and curious history, to contemporary explorations of them. Audible Forces features the work of 7 UK sound artists. Mark Anderson, Jony Easterby, Kathy Hinde, Dan Fox, Nathaniel Mann and Mike Blow joined Max and each created their own instruments that harness the wind. Their instruments form a unified experience made up of an ever changing sound world that captures the imagination. This film focuses on Howling Wire. Commissioned by Brighton Festival and Without Walls, Produced by Oxford Contemporary Music.

Bamboo wind flutes

We have been commissioned to make groups of large wind flutes for two locations: Dilston Physic Garden and Grizedale Forest. We also created three aeolian sound gardens in infant schools around Burnley. Children from the schools visited the Singing Ringing Tree then Dan worked with them to visualise the sounds of the wind. Theur drawings were branded into the flutes. Anemometeres and a simple weather vane/ wimd speed meter were added to the top of the flutes.
