A few collected thoughts on Adrift

"This was as well constructed and thoughtful a show as I've seen anywhere at any festival in Europe. A thrilling piece of event theatre full of  innovation, design excellence and artistic beauty that transformed from an installation into a show and then back into an unforgettable installation.

It's so rare that a show from a UK company feels as complete, lyrical  and cohesive as this on important levels, including technical design, an element that is so important.  So the time put into the show by various sources really was transparently on display.

I have to admit though, having previously seen Adrift as a work-in-progress, the elegance of Adrift at its' next stage of development came completely out of the blue and left me feeling quite ecstatic.

One measure of Adrift's success was how the performers managed to make a genuine connection with the audience.  The hands were heard clapping very early on and then throughout the show and the crowd "ooh" and "ahhed" in all the right places. A rare thing for outdoor shows where people are often a little bit too in awe.

I would love to see the show on water or very high up. Either would be worth doing

I really enjoyed the atmosphere the show created, with the charming and idiosyncratic characters and costumes and their little world. It wasn't till I was driving home and thinking about it that I started to piece together the bigger meaning of the piece, with their "houses" all up above the ground for protection from the floods and the idea of them all coming together to journey together - a bit of an Ark type theme. I guess this is what was meant  - anyway it's what it meant to me.

I thought the staging worked well and could envisage it up high on a hill-top somewhere. It also looked beautiful from a bit further away as you see the whole
show as one, rather than concentrating on individual characters. The detail of the sets and costumes was really lovely. I liked the way that at each stage, something more revealed itself about the set, or the fireworks and lighting.
